Ray enlisted in the Militia in 1938 at Victoria Barracks with 1 Survey Battery RAA.  In 1940 he enlisted in the 2 AIF in 2/1 Survey Regiment.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in September and served in the Middle East, returning to Australia in 1942.  The Regiment was disbanded and he was allotted Arty Survey Officer RAA 3 Division in Western Australia.  He then moved to 8 Survey Battery RAA in Queensland prior to serving in Morotai, Borneo and Labuan.  Rays worst memory was the loss of his tent mate Capt W Cridland by a Japanese sniper then being promoted in the field to take his place.

Following the war he returned to the Commonwealth Bank, but continued his Army service during national service, during which time he was promoted to Major in 1947.  Ray joined the RAA Association in 1948 becoming a Life Member in 1965.  His other great task was initially Secretary then later President of 2/1 Survey Regiment Association.  He noted that it was interesting that the Secretary of the association is now Frank Cridland, son of his old friend killed in Borneo. He retired from the bank in 1979.
