Historical Specifics

The 68 Pounder gun at Bradleys Head is mounted on a replica Sliding Medium Wood No 22 carriage with Slide Traversing Dwarf No 16. This gun has two numbers recorded on it. On the left hand trunnel is the number 10925 being the manufacturers number. On the first re-inforce is the serial number 7633.

The 68 pounder was first brought into British service in the 1840s. They are first recorded in NSW in 1864 when three are shown in Store. By 1869 a total 18 are recorded in Store. 68 Pounders were used at Georges Head, Middle Head, South Head, Bradleys Head, Fort Scratchley (Newcastle), Signal Hill (Wollongong).
